U.S. Army American Optical Co. M3 Infrared Sniper Scope for an M1 Carbine Rifle with Chest Corps of Engineers U.S. Army Chest Sniper scope, Infrared, 20000 volts American Optical Co Buffalo N.Y. Dated 06-23-51 stock list 18-2804.720-200 The scope shows Corps of Engineer Telescope, Sniperscope, Infrared NOTE: please refer to pictures as we have not tested this great piece of Military Equipment. Developed during WWII, the M3 was named a "sniper scope" in official nomenclature to obscure its true function as an early infra-red night scope capable of spotting targets at over 100 yards and detecting other IR-sources up to a mile away. Mounted on an M1 semi-automatic carbine, the scope could be used by night sentries to detect incoming sneak attacks and direct outbound machine gun and rifle fire with tracer rounds.
