Sold for: $90
Description
This lot presents 96 vintage .38 Special ammunition cartridges issued to US Naval Aviators for survival purposes distributed across two utilitarian-style cardboard boxes, likely dating to the 1960s based on visible headstamps and handwritten notations. The first box, identified through web intelligence as a US Military Box 50rds 38 Special M41 Ammo, is from Federal Cartridge Corporation. It is marked “50 CARTRIDGES BALL CALIBER .38 SPECIAL M41 LOT F. C. 1865” and contains 50 brass-cased cartridges with copper projectiles, featuring ‘FC 63’ headstamps. An interior flap specifies these are “EXCLUSIVELY FOR MILITARY USE.” Handwritten annotations on this box include “1960’s Charnesky”. The second box, by Remington Arms Co., Inc., is labeled “50 CARTRIDGES SPECIAL, TRACER CAL. .38, 120 GRAIN LOT R.A. 5024”. It holds 50 brass-cased cartridges, some featuring distinct red-tipped projectiles indicative of tracer rounds, with ‘RA 63’ headstamps. Handwritten annotations on this box include “Char…”.
Condition report:
Both cardboard boxes exhibit moderate wear, some discoloration, tape, and handwritten annotations. The cartridges themselves appear in very good, unfired condition with minimal tarnish.
