Gun Collectors Dream Auction #79 Weapons of War
Lot 1153:
Sold for: $225
Description
A WWI US Army M1917 Doughboy Helmet, Brodie style, featuring a rounded crown and a wide, shallow brim, characteristic of early 20th-century military headwear. The exterior, likely steel, has a heavily textured, dull olive-drab or greenish-brown finish. On one side, a painted black circular emblem contains a yellow-orange cross. The interior includes a deteriorated black leather-like sweatband, a fibrous padded lining, and a worn brown leather chinstrap, on which the legible name “A.F. ZWEIFEL” (a German surname) is handwritten.
Condition report:
The helmet displays significant wear, extensive surface rust, pitting, and paint loss to the exterior finish. The interior components are deteriorated, including the black leather-like sweatband, fibrous padded lining, and brown leather chinstrap. The chinstrap shows considerable wear but the handwritten name remains legible.
