Description
A French Medaille Militaire, 3rd Republic, 1870-1940 type. This historical award medal is suspended from a vertically striped yellow and light green textile ribbon. The medal features a multi-piece construction, comprising a dark bronze-toned metal suspension device depicting crossed military accoutrements such as cannons, axes, and swords. This device connects to a round medallion, which consists of a silver-toned wreath surrounding a central gilded disc. The obverse of the disc displays a classical female profile bust, encircled by a blue enamel band with the gold inscription “RÉPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE” and the date “1870”. The reverse of the central disc, also with a blue enamel band, is inscribed “VALEUR ET DISCIPLINE”.
Condition report:
The overall condition indicates significant age and use. The textile ribbon exhibits noticeable fraying and discoloration. The metal components show heavy patina, surface wear, and some oxidation. The enamel on the central discs appears largely stable with minor wear consistent with age.
