An original U.S. Civil War Model 1858 Smooth Side Canteen. This antique, military-style canteen features a flattened spherical metal body encased in a worn brown or olive-drab felt cover. It is fitted with a metal neck and stopper, which is secured by a short chain. An attached light tan canvas shoulder strap is present, secured to the canteen body by two metal clips or rivets.
Condition report:
Overall condition is consistent with extensive age and field use. The felt cover exhibits notable surface dirt, discoloration, and material wear. The canvas shoulder strap shows significant fraying and deterioration. Metal components, including the neck, stopper, chain, and strap clips, display patination and surface wear. No discernible text or markings are visible.
