Lot 1219:
Belgium. Croix de Guerre, 1914-1918, with Lion Disc and Palm
Sold for: $55
Description
A Belgian Croix de Guerre, 1914-1918, with lion disc and palm. This military or chivalric order features a patinated bronze-toned metal Maltese-style cross, suspended from a detailed royal crown and a fabric ribbon. Four swords extend diagonally between the arms of the cross, which culminate in spherical finials at their tips. The central medallion on the obverse depicts a rampant lion. The reverse of the central medallion features a stylized monogram, possibly “AR” or “RA,” consistent with the ‘A’ cypher often associated with King Albert I. The ribbon is red with multiple narrow, vertical yellow-green stripes.
Condition report:
The metal components exhibit significant patination and wear consistent with age. The fabric ribbon shows creasing and signs of age, with fraying evident at its top edge.
