Description

A Japanese 1914-20 War Service Medal, also known as the Taishō 3rd to 9th Year War Service Medal, covering the period of 1914-1920, which includes the Siberian Intervention. The circular medal is constructed from a dark bronze or copper alloy and is suspended from a matching metal bar and textile ribbon. The obverse features a chrysanthemum emblem positioned above two crossed flags, one resembling the Japanese Rising Sun, all surrounded by foliage. The suspension bar above this side is inscribed with ‘従軍記章’ (Jūgun Kishō), translating to ‘War Service Medal.’ The reverse bears the inscription ‘大正三年 乃至九年 従軍記章’ (Taishō San Nen Naishi Kyū Nen Jūgun Kishō), meaning ‘Taishō 3rd Year to 9th Year War Service Medal.’ The ribbon is vertically striped in blue/dark blue and a central yellow/gold or white/off-white stripe.

Condition report:

The medal exhibits an aged patina consistent with its age. The textile ribbon shows significant fading, discoloration, fraying, and minor damage.
