Gun Collectors Dream Auction #79 Weapons of War
Lot 1524:
Sold for: $300
Description
A Dutch Beaumont Vitali Model 1871/88 bolt-action military rifle, manufactured by Steyr. This long-barreled rifle is constructed of wood and steel, featuring an external box magazine, indicative of the Vitali conversion. The wooden stock exhibits a reddish-brown hue with visible grain, and a faint circular cartouche mark is present near the butt. The steel components, including the barrel, receiver, and other fittings, display significant patination. Key visible markings include the year “1878” and serial number “1622” on the receiver, along with “STEYR” (identifying the Austrian manufacturer) and “R. 643” repeated on the receiver and bolt. The steel buttplate is stamped “1881” and “832”. A ladder-type adjustable rear sight shows numerical graduations up to “11”. A cleaning rod is housed beneath the barrel.
Condition report:
The wooden stock shows wear, scratches, and minor dings consistent with age and use. The steel components display significant patination and loss of original finish. Areas of surface pitting and light rust speckling are visible, particularly on the buttplate. Overall, the item is in good antique condition, reflecting its historical use.
