Gun Collectors Dream Auction #79 Weapons of War
Lot 180:
Sold for: $1,250
Description
An antique Burnside Civil War Percussion Carbine, likely a 4th or 5th Model. This breech-loading firearm is constructed primarily of dark-stained wood for the stock and aged iron/steel for the barrel, receiver, and firing mechanism, complemented by visible brass or bronze elements within the lever-action mechanism. It features an external hammer and a trigger guard that doubles as a breech-operating lever. A saddle ring is present on the left side of the receiver. Key markings include “BURNSIDE RIFLE CO. / PROVIDENCE R.I.” on the side plate, along with serial numbers or production marks “6967” and “E967” on the top of the breechblock/receiver, and a singular “D” on the side plate.
Condition report:
Good antique condition. The wooden stock exhibits numerous scratches, dents, and abrasions consistent with age and field use. Metal components show extensive, mottled brown patination, surface oxidation, and minor pitting throughout. The action appears to function, though it has not been tested with live ammunition. Markings are legible.
