Gun Collectors Dream Auction #79 Weapons of War
Lot 209:
Sold for: $150
Description
A U.S. Civil War Model 1861 Cartridge Box, constructed from dark leather with a flap closure. The front features a prominent oval brass plate with the raised letters “US”. Additional brass hardware includes buckles, a finial, and an internal bar. The box contains two internal tin inserts, consistent with its function as an ammunition cartridge box for infantry. The design and materials suggest a 19th-century American military context.
Condition report:
The item exhibits significant wear commensurate with age and use. The leather is dry, cracked, and has lost much of its original finish, revealing a reddish-brown undertone in many areas. White powdery residue, possibly mold or efflorescence, is visible, particularly along edges and raised surfaces. The brass elements show a deep patina and areas of green oxidation (verdigris). Despite the wear, the box remains structurally complete.
