Gun Collectors Dream Auction #79 Weapons of War
Lot 223:
Sold for: $120
Description
An Imperial German Model 1889 Prussian Officer’s Sword, dating from the late 19th to early 20th century. The sword features a straight, triple-fullered steel blade with a visible point. Markings on the blade include “ERFURT” beneath a crown on one side, indicating the Royal Prussian Arsenal at Erfurt, and “W.K & C. SOLINGEN” on the reverse, identifying the German manufacturer Weyersberg, Kirschbaum & Cie. The hilt comprises a cast brass or bronze guard with pierced foliate motifs and a wire-wrapped grip adorned with a crest-like escutcheon. The guard is further stamped “98 R. E. D. 22,” likely a regimental or inventory marking. A heavily deteriorated portepee, consisting of a braided metallic thread knot attached to a worn and damaged leather strap, is tied to the hilt.
Condition report:
Fair to poor antique condition. The steel blade exhibits heavy patination, surface rust, and pitting throughout. The cast brass or bronze guard shows significant verdigris and wear. The wire-wrapped grip is worn. The portepee is heavily deteriorated, with the braided metallic thread knot and leather strap displaying significant wear and damage. Overall degradation is consistent with age and use.
