Lot 250:
Sold for: $50
Description
A vintage Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) Veteran’s Medal, crafted from bronze or brass-toned metal and textile. The suspension bar features a spread-winged eagle perched atop crossed cannons, fitted with a C-clasp pin on its reverse. Suspended from this bar is a folded ribbon, displaying a faded United States flag motif on its front face and red and white vertical stripes on its reverse. The primary medallion is a five-pointed star with ornate, trefoil-tipped points. Its obverse depicts a central relief scene of three figures, two standing and one kneeling, encircled by the embossed English text “GRAND ARMY OF THE REPUBLIC” along the upper curve, and “1861 VETERAN 1866” along the lower curve. The reverse of the star showcases an intricate radial pattern with a central shield containing the vertically oriented English word “UNION”.
Condition report:
The piece exhibits considerable surface wear, minor discoloration, and a dark, aged patina consistent with its apparent age and use. The textile ribbon displays significant fraying and wear. The C-clasp pin on the reverse of the suspension bar is present and functional.
