Gun Collectors Dream Auction #79 Weapons of War
Lot 319:
Sold for: $150
Description
A U.S. Model 1816 socket bayonet, consistent with those used during the Civil War era. This example is constructed entirely from ferrous metal, likely steel or iron. It features a cylindrical socket with an integral rectangular attachment slot, which transitions via a bent shank to a straight, tapering blade with a flattened profile. The blade is clearly stamped vertically with “US” (United States) near the socket, below which fainter, indistinct characters are visible.
Condition report:
The bayonet exhibits significant surface wear, pitting, and a dark, oxidized patina with areas of reddish-brown rust across all surfaces, indicating considerable age and use. Its structural integrity appears to be intact.
