An English John Wiggan Percussion Musket “Constabulary Carbine”. Rare; It is believed these were produced on the order of Washington Sewallis Shirley, 9th Earl Ferrers (1822-59) of Staunton Harold in Leicestershire for his private militia unit, presumably to defend his estates in the event of invasion from the continent or more likely from poachers and thieves from the local area. John Wiggan, Gunmaker to the Royal Family & the Pacha of Egypt This percussion cap long gun features a dark wooden stock with a patinated steel barrel and lock mechanism. The lock plate is visibly marked “John Wiggan” and “25”. The number “25” is also stamped into the left side of the buttstock. Brass furniture includes the trigger guard, butt plate, and ramrod pipes. The right side of the buttstock bears a faint sticker with “452” and a branded or stamped design resembling a crowned anchor.
