Lot 362:
Sold for: $40
Description
A U.S. World War I M1917 Gas Mask Kit, comprising a tan canvas shoulder bag, a respirator, and a filter canister. The tan canvas shoulder bag features a flap closure with two metal snap buttons and an adjustable strap. The interior flap is marked in black ink with “Pvt. A. S. Lloyd”, “32nd Engrs. Co. C”, “Amer. Ex. Forces.”, and “France”, indicating a World War I American Expeditionary Forces origin. The respirator, also primarily of tan canvas, includes two round, metal-framed eyepieces and connects via a corrugated fabric hose to the filter canister. The rectangular, ribbed metal filter canister is painted yellow, shows substantial paint loss and rust, and is embossed with “AMCO” on its top surface. The entire kit exhibits considerable wear, dirt, staining, and fraying, consistent with heavy use and age.
Condition report:
The canvas bag shows significant wear, dirt, and staining, with notable fraying along the edges and strap. Both metal snap buttons are present but show age-related tarnishing. The ink markings on the interior flap are legible but faded in areas. The respirator\'s canvas components are heavily worn and stained, with some fraying and minor tears. The metal-framed eyepieces show tarnishing and surface wear. The corrugated fabric hose is creased, discolored, and shows signs of material degradation. The metal filter canister exhibits substantial paint loss to its yellow finish, exposing underlying rust across much of its surface. The \"AMCO\" embossing is visible but partially obscured by wear and corrosion. Overall, the kit is in heavily used and aged condition, consistent with its military provenance.
