Description

A U.S. Springfield Model 1884 Trapdoor Rifle, a single-shot breech-loader. The rifle features a large hammer, an adjustable rear sight, and an under-barrel ramrod. It is constructed with a dark hardwood stock, likely walnut, and blued/patinated steel and iron components for the barrel, receiver, and other parts. Key markings include “U.S. SPRINGFIELD” with an eagle motif on the lock plate, “U.S. MODEL 1884” on the breech block, “V P” with an eagle head proof mark on the barrel, and serial number “367557” on the receiver. A faint inspection cartouche, possibly dated “1890,” is visible on the stock, and “U.S.” is marked on the butt plate tang. The rifle appears complete.

Condition report:

The rifle exhibits significant wear consistent with age and military use. Metal components show extensive bluing loss, surface patina, and some areas of corrosion. The wooden stock has numerous dings, scratches, and finish wear throughout.
