Description

An Austro-Hungarian WWI brass Legitimationskapsel, a personal military identification document holder, belonging to Maxim Mathkovic. The small, hinged rectangular metal case contains multiple handwritten paper inserts detailing the owner’s personal and military information. Maxim Mathkovic was born in 1877 and conscripted in 1915 (“Assentjahrgang”). He served in the K.u.k. Infanterie Regiment Nr. 96, 1. Kompanie (Imperial and Royal Infantry Regiment No. 96, 1st Company). His religion is noted as Roman Catholic, and his local community (“Orts-gemeinde”) as Fiume, Hungary (“Land Ungarn”). An internal page also lists the address of his wife, Gisella Mathkovic, at Fiume, Via opera 7. The object’s design and content are consistent with its purpose as a personal military or identity document holder from the Austro-Hungarian Empire era, likely early 20th century around World War I.

Condition report:

The brass case exhibits significant surface wear, scratches, and an aged patination consistent with its age and utilitarian purpose. The hinged mechanism appears functional. The internal paper inserts are discolored, fragile, and show signs of handling, creasing, and minor tears, but all handwritten details remain legible.
