Description

A French Commemorative Medal for the 1870-1871 War, designed by Georges Lemaire. This medal, created in 1911 during the Third Republic, commemorates the Franco-Prussian War. The circular bronze medal is suspended from a vertically striped textile ribbon featuring alternating bright green and black bands. The obverse depicts a left-facing profile bust of a helmeted allegorical figure, likely Marianne, with the inscription “REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE” (French Republic) encircling it and “GEORGES LEMAIRE” signed below the bust. The reverse displays the dates “1870” and “1871” at the top, above a central design of a draped flag surrounded by various military implements including rifles, swords, drums, and an anchor, with a rectangular cartouche at the bottom inscribed “AUX DÉFENSEURS DE LA PATRIE” (To the Defenders of the Homeland).

Condition report:

The bronze medal shows an aged patina with minor surface wear. The textile ribbon is in fair to poor condition, exhibiting significant fraying at the top edge and some discoloration.
