Description

A Remington Model 34 The Sportmaster bolt-action sporting rifle. The barrel and receiver are marked “REMINGTON ARMS CO. INC., ILION, N.Y., MADE IN U.S.A.” along with patent numbers 1,908,035, 1,913,840, and 2,355,257. The receiver is also marked “Remington REG. U.S. PAT. OFF.”, “THE SPORTMASTER”, “MODEL 34”, and specifies “22 SHORT, LONG OR LONG RIFLE” for ammunition compatibility. Additional marks include “Ω 44 A” and a date code “J 44”. It features a traditional design with a reddish-brown hardwood stock and blued steel metal components. The rifle is fitted with a front post sight, an adjustable rear leaf sight, and a black textured hard rubber buttplate bearing the “Remington” logo. While the rifle is explicitly marked “MODEL 34” and “THE SPORTMASTER”, research indicates that the “Sportmaster” designation was typically applied to Remington’s 500-series rifles (e.g., Model 512) produced from the 1940s, whereas the Model 34 was produced from 1932-1936. The presence of patent number 2,355,257 (issued August 1944) and the “J 44” date code suggest a production date no earlier than late 1944, which is consistent with the 500-series Sportmaster production period. Visually similar examples found in the market are often identified as Remington Model 512 Sportmaster rifles, sharing the same .22 S, L, LR caliber.

Condition report:

Good, used condition. The wooden stock exhibits typical wear commensurate with age and use, including numerous scratches, dings, and areas of finish loss. The blued metal parts show finish wear, particularly along edges and high points. The buttplate shows some wear. Mechanical function appears to be in working order, though a professional inspection is recommended prior to use.
