Gun Collectors Dream Auction #81 January 31st & Feb 1st
Lot 477:
Sold for: $425
Description
This is one single-shot, break-action Winchester Model 37 “Steelbilt” shotgun, chambered for .410 gauge, 3-inch shells. The firearm features an external hammer and a smooth wood buttstock and forend. The buttplate is a checkered black composite marked “WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS.” Markings visible on the barrel include: “MADE IN U.S.A. WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN CONN. PATENTS PENDING. – MODEL 37-STEELBILT-.410-3 IN.- WINCHESTER- TRADE MARK” and the choke designation “FULL.” The receiver displays significant user-applied markings: the left side has crude, scratched-in engraving that appears to read “R.E.R 683,” and the right side has a faded red paint marking reading “WINCHESTER.” No factory serial number is visible. It is the buyer’s responsibility to ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal firearms laws.
Condition report:
The overall condition is fair to poor, heavily impacted by wear and user modifications. The blued finish on the receiver is extensively thinned, worn down to gray metal in many areas, and covered in surface scratches and handling marks. The barrel retains more bluing but also exhibits numerous scratches and areas of finish loss. The wood furniture (buttstock and forend) shows heavy use, characterized by deep scratches, dings, and scuffs throughout. The action appears to function correctly, cocking and breaking open as designed, but we have not function-tested this firearm with live ammunition. The bore condition is unknown as it was not inspected. The composite buttplate shows significant wear and some chipping.
