Lot 1230:
Sold for: $650
Description
A classic example of the Savage Arms Model 1899 lever-action repeating rifle, manufactured by the Savage Arms Company of Utica, New York, U.S.A. This rifle is chambered for the popular .30-30 caliber cartridge, marked clearly near the barrel-receiver junction. The rifle features a full wooden stock and forearm, paired with a blued steel barrel and a grey metal receiver. The Model 1899 is historically significant for its innovative rotary magazine design, which allowed the safe use of pointed spitzer bullets in a lever-action platform. The barrel is marked “SAVAGE HI-PRESSURE STEEL” and “MODEL 1899.” Additional manufacturer markings cite “SAVAGE ARMS COMPANY, UTICA, N.Y., U.S.A.” and include patent dates: “FEBRUARY 7, 1893 JULY 25, 1893 OCTOBER 3, 1899.” The serial number 62,895 is stamped on the underside of the receiver, placing its manufacture in the early 20th century. The rifle is equipped with a blade front sight and an adjustable rear sight. This model is highly sought after by collectors of classic American sporting and hunting rifles.
