Description
A vintage Winchester Model 1897 slide-action repeating shotgun chambered in 16 gauge. This example features a 27″ barrel and is marked with the serial number 407660D forward of the receiver. The barrel is marked “16 GA.” and “FULL” choke designation, along with the manufacturer location “NEW HAVEN CONN. U.S.A.” and patent dates: “FEB. 22, 98. JUNE 14, 98. OCT. 16, 1900.” Based on the serial number, this shotgun was manufactured circa 1908. The shotgun utilizes dark wood furniture, including a grooved forend and a buttstock fitted with the original black, textured buttplate marked “WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO.” The action type is the classic external hammer pump-action design for which the Model 1897 is famous. The muzzle is fitted with a ventilated, purplish metallic aftermarket device identified as a WEAVER CHOKE, marked “EL PASO TEX. U.S.A.” and “PAT. NO. 1773280.” The Weaver Choke acts as both a muzzle brake and an adjustable choke system. No scale is present for overall measurements.
