Description
This lot consists of a pair of vintage Hodgdon rifle powder containers intended for ammunition reloading. The first item is a cylindrical 16 oz (454 g) metal can of Hodgdon H870 Spherical Rifle Powder featuring a green, black, and red label with the manufacturer’s stylized H logo. Key markings include SPHERICAL H870 BRAND, HODGDON RIFLE POWDER POUDRE A FUSIL, and NET WT 16 oz 454g. The reverse side specifies the manufacturer as HODGDON POWDER COMPANY, INC. located at 7710 W. 50 Highway, Shawnee Mission, Kansas 66202. This container retains its original red plastic cap. The second item is a rectangular, flat metal can for Hodgdon 4895 Rifle Powder decorated in a distinctive red and yellow motif. The front of the can is marked HODGDON’S rifle powder 4895, while the reverse side identifies the distributor as B. E. HODGDON, INC. of Merriam, Kans. and includes a detailed cautionary statement regarding the handling of smokeless propellants. This can is fitted with its original metal screw cap.
Condition report:
Both containers exhibit signs of age-related wear typical of vintage reloading supplies. The H870 can shows surface scuffing, minor label abrasions, and light oxidation on the exposed metal rims and base. The 4895 can displays similar surface wear, minor paint loss, and light oxidation on the metal surfaces. Both caps are present and appear to function correctly. The containers are sold as vintage collectibles; the chemical stability and viability of any internal contents have not been tested and should be treated as inert for display purposes.
