Description
This is a single-shot break-action shotgun chambered in .44 caliber, a configuration historically utilized for small game or as a garden gun. The firearm features a smoothbore barrel with an integrated forged lug and a simple brass bead front sight. The metal surfaces consist of a blued barrel and a receiver that originally featured a case-hardened finish, now transitioned to a mottled gray and brown patina. The furniture includes a plain wood forend and a matching buttstock terminating in a heavily worn black buttplate. Key markings include the manufacturer and model designation on the left side of the receiver, which reads IVER JOHNSON’S ARMS & CYCLE WORKS / FITCHBURG MASS U.S.A. / CHAMPION. The top of the barrel is stamped 44 CAL. – BARREL AND LUG FORGED IN ONE. along with a patent date of JUNE 15. 15. The serial number 78289 is clearly struck on the lower tang. The wood components show various scuffs and scratches, including a notable crack at the wrist behind the upper receiver tang. Note – All firearms require a federal 4473 background check.
Condition report:
The firearm is in fair overall condition. The barrel retains a portion of its original blued finish with significant thinning, handling wear, and areas of light surface pitting and oxidation. The receiver exhibits a faded gray and brown patina with scattered light pitting throughout. The wood stock and forend show numerous scuffs, scratches, and dings consistent with age and use, including a structural crack at the wrist behind the upper receiver tang. The black buttplate is heavily worn with some loss at the edges. The action appears to function correctly, though we have not function-tested this firearm.
