Description

A pair of Winchester-Western Ball Powder smokeless propellant cans, comprising one can of 760 powder intended for centerfire rifle loads and one can of 571 powder intended for magnum shotshell loads with heavy shot charges. Both items feature cylindrical metal construction with paper labels and threaded metal caps. The 760 can is identified by a pink and white label with the red Winchester W logo, while the 571 can features a blue and white label and is marked as a 1 pound container. Verbatim markings on the labels include Winchester-Western, Ball Powder, Smokeless Propellant, and the specific powder numbers 760 and 571. The labels further specify the intended use as For Center Fire Rifle Loads and For Magnum Shot Shell Loads With Heavy Shot Charge. Additional text includes warnings such as Danger Smokeless Gunpowder, Highly Flammable, and Keep Out Of Reach Of Children. The lower portions of the labels identify the manufacturer as the Winchester-Western Division, New Haven, Connecticut and East Alton, Illinois, and note that the products are manufactured by a patented process. These containers are offered as historical collectibles; the presence, condition, and chemical stability of any internal contents have not been tested or verified.

Condition report:

The metal components of both cans, including the tops, bottoms, and screw-on caps, exhibit significant surface oxidation and heavy rust. The paper labels show overall age-toning, foxing, and staining. The label on the 760 can has sustained notable tearing and paper loss along the bottom edge and left side. The 571 label shows minor edge wear and staining but remains largely complete. The caps are present but show heavy corrosion.
