Gun Collectors Dream Auction #83 May 2nd & 3rd TWO DAYS - NO RESERVES - 1200 LOTS!
Lot 531:
Description
This is a single-shot break-action shotgun chambered for 12-gauge shells, produced for the retailer Montgomery Ward under the Hercules model name. The firearm is configured with a single blued barrel and a case-hardened receiver that exhibits mottled blue and purple coloration. The furniture consists of a smooth hardwood pistol-grip stock and a grooved forend, both featuring a high-gloss finish. The shotgun is equipped with an external hammer, a top-lever release, a brass bead front sight, and a black serrated buttplate. Key markings include the model designation Hercules over MONTGOMERY WARD on the left side of the receiver and a small circular mark containing the number 21 near the breech. Barrel markings specify PROOF TESTED 12 GAUGE on the left side and SELECTED FORGED STEEL on the right. Note – All firearms require a federal 4473 background check.
Condition report:
The receiver retains a significant amount of its original case-hardened finish with visible colors, though there is scattered surface oxidation and light pitting present on both sides. The blued barrel shows minor finish wear, light scratches, and some thinning at the muzzle. The hardwood stock and forend are in good condition, retaining a high-gloss finish with scattered light handling marks and minor dings. The bore was not inspected. The action appears to function correctly with a firm lockup, though we have not function-tested this firearm.
