Description
This is a single Remington Model 4 single-shot rolling block rifle chambered in .32 Short or Long Rimfire, a model originally introduced for small game hunting and gallery shooting. The round barrel features prominent markings on the top reading Remington Arms Co., Inc., Remington Ilion Works, Ilion, N.Y. Made in U.S.A. along with the Remington trade mark and the caliber designation .32 Short or Long R.F. On the left side of the receiver, the model and serial number are stamped as Model 4 and 327188. The rifle is equipped with standard walnut furniture, including a slender forend and a straight-comb buttstock. A notable longitudinal crack is present on the underside of the forend, and the buttstock displays circular wooden plugs on both sides, suggesting previous repairs or modifications. The rifle is fitted with a fixed front blade sight and a screw-adjustable rear notch sight, while the butt is capped with a hard rubber plate bearing the Remington UMC trade mark. The metal surfaces exhibit a significant mottled and pitted patina on the receiver, while the barrel retains some thinning blued finish with areas of surface oxidation. Condition report:
The metal surfaces show significant age and handling wear, with the receiver displaying a dark mottled gray and brown patina accompanied by moderate pitting throughout. The barrel retains some of its original blued finish but is thinning and shows scattered patches of surface oxidation and light pitting. The bore was not inspected but likely exhibits wear consistent with the exterior condition. The rolling block action appears to function correctly, though it has not been function-tested with live ammunition. The walnut stock and forend show heavy use with numerous dings and scratches; a prominent longitudinal crack is visible on the forend, and the buttstock features two circular wooden plugs on either side at the wrist and rear. The hard rubber buttplate is intact but shows minor wear.
