Gun Collectors Dream Auction #84 June 13th & 14th
Lot 191:
Sold for: $85
Description
This is a Benjamin Franklin Model 317 pneumatic pump action air rifle chambered in .177 caliber, a classic American design produced by the Benjamin Air Rifle Company. The rifle features a single shot bolt action loading system paired with a pneumatic pump mechanism operated by the ribbed wooden forend. The construction consists of a brass barrel and compression tube, which originally featured a blackened finish. The furniture is a two piece walnut set, including a grooved pump handle and a plain buttstock with a curved heel. Verbatim markings on the left side of the compression tube include BENJAMIN FRANKLIN and MADE IN USA, along with the instructional text COCK HAMMER TO RELEASE SAFETY. The rear end cap is stamped with the model number 317. A serial number 242651 is stamped into the right side of the compression tube. The rifle is equipped with fixed iron sights, consisting of a front blade and a rear elevator sight. Note – As an antique or black powder firearm, this item does not require a background check.
Condition report:
The air rifle exhibits significant surface wear consistent with age and utility, with much of the original black finish lost, exposing the underlying brass across the barrel and compression tube. There is scattered surface oxidation and light oxidation present throughout the metal components. The walnut stock and forend show numerous dings, scratches, and surface compressions but remain structurally sound without visible cracks. The pump action and bolt appear to function correctly; however, we have not function tested this rifle for pressure retention or projectile velocity. The sights are present and appear original to the piece.
