Gun Collectors Dream Auction #85 Weapons of War July 18th 10AM CST
Lot 11:
Sold for: $100
Description
A World War I British Mark I steel helmet manufactured by Manning, Wardle and Co., Ltd. of Leeds. This helmet, commonly known as the Brodie pattern, features a classic low-dome steel shell with a wide, flared brim and a steel rim binding. The exterior is finished in period-correct olive-drab textured paint. The interior is stamped on the underside of the brim with the manufacturer code ML followed by the heat lot number 194. The interior assembly retains its original World War I-pattern liner, constructed from black oilcloth with a net drawstring for adjustment. A white circular felt and rubber cushioning pad, often referred to as a donut, is situated at the center of the crown. The helmet is complete with its original two-piece brown leather chinstrap, which is secured to the shell via wire loops and features a sliding metal adjustment buckle.
Condition report:
The helmet is in good historical condition. The exterior shows an aged patina with significant surface oxidation and darkening of the textured paint consistent with age and field use. The interior liner remains intact, but the oilcloth is stiff and displays signs of cracking. The white crown pad shows light staining and mold or foxing. The leather chinstrap is dry and shows minor surface cracking but remains complete and securely attached to the shell.
