Gun Collectors Dream Auction #85 Weapons of War July 18th 10AM CST
Lot 152:
Sold for: $190
Description
This is an antique US military field bugle or field trumpet, identified by its applied insignia as belonging to Battery A of the 7th Artillery Regiment. The instrument features a copper body with brass ferrules and a brass bell rim. The brass insignia on the bell depicts crossed cannons, the traditional symbol of the Artillery branch, with the digit 7 positioned to the left of the intersection and the letter A to the right. The bugle is constructed in a single-loop pattern, a standard form for field signals during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It includes a brass mouthpiece which is secured to the instrument by a small metal chain. No manufacturer marks, dates, or contract numbers are visible on the bell, ferrules, or mouthpiece. A modern black plastic zip-tie has been added to the lead pipe, likely for display purposes.
Condition report:
The bugle is in as-found condition, exhibiting significant signs of age and field service. The copper body has developed a heavy, dark patina with visible areas of oxidation and green verdigris, particularly concentrated around the joints and brass fittings. There are several small dents and dings located along the tubing and on the bell flare. The soldered joints appear stable and intact. The brass mouthpiece shows wear consistent with the rest of the instrument. The attached plastic zip-tie is a non-original addition.
