Description
This is an Indian Ishapore No. 1 Mk III* Short Magazine Lee-Enfield (SMLE) bolt action service rifle chambered in .303 British. The firearm features a full length hardwood stock with a brass buttplate incorporating a trapdoor for a cleaning kit. It is fitted with a ten round detachable box magazine, protected front sight ears, and an adjustable leaf rear sight graduated to 2,000 yards. The right side of the butt socket is stamped No 1 Mk 3* above F.R. 53, denoting a factory repair refurbishment at Ishapore Arsenal in 1953. The receiver ring displays serial number 75037 above an X, accompanied by a crown over crossed flags proof. Import marks for Century Arms International are present on the left side of the receiver reading CAI ST ALB VT. The right side of the buttstock shows two circular cartouches, including an IS Ishapore property mark dated 1953. Per user provided information, the rifle features matching serial numbers on the receiver and bolt handle.
Condition report:
The metalwork exhibits a dark arsenal finish with general thinning, light surface wear, and a mottled patina throughout consistent with service use. No significant pitting is observed in the provided images. The hardwood furniture shows various service related indentations, scratches, and bruising, with a small chip present at the top of the buttstock comb. The brass buttplate has a dulled, aged appearance. The bolt action and trigger appear mechanically functional, though the rifle should be inspected by a qualified gunsmith prior to operation.
