Lot 624:
Sold for: $475
Description
This is a Nepalese-manufactured breech-loading percussion rifle produced in the pattern of the British Snider-Enfield. It features the characteristic side-swinging breech block mechanism used to convert muzzle-loaders or for purpose-built breech-loaders. The rifle is constructed with a dark hardwood full-length stock secured by three iron barrel bands. The upper barrel band incorporates a sling swivel, with a second swivel located at the front of the brass trigger guard. The furniture is composed of brass, including the trigger guard and buttplate. The weapon is equipped with a flip-up rear ladder sight and includes a period-correct triangular socket bayonet. Visible markings include Indic script, likely Devanagari, on several components. The rear ladder sight is graduated with four distinct characters. The brass trigger guard extension is incised with two lines of script, the lower line resembling the numerals 33. The upper buttplate tang is marked with incised characters resembling Nepalese numerals for 65. The base of the bayonet blade is stamped with the numerals 490.
Condition report:
The rifle is in as-found historical condition. All iron components, including the barrel, lock, and breech, show significant darkening, surface oxidation, and areas of pitting, particularly concentrated around the breech and hammer. The hardwood stock exhibits heavy wear with numerous indentations, scratches, and bruising consistent with age and long-term storage. A deep scratch or stable crack is visible on the right side of the buttstock. The brass furniture shows a deep, uncleaned patina with various surface scratches. The breech block is functional and swings open, but the mechanical functionality of the lock and firing pin has not been tested. The bore is uninspected and shows signs of oxidation.
