Description

This single-shot Peabody falling block rifle is chambered in .45 Long Colt and features a configuration consistent with a sporting or custom-modified piece. The rifle is fitted with a blued round barrel and a case-hardened receiver, hammer, and lever, all showing bright, mottled colors. The furniture includes a smooth walnut straight-grip buttstock and a matching forend, both exhibiting a high-gloss finish with very minor handling marks. The firearm is equipped with a fixed front blade sight and an adjustable flip-up rear ladder sight. A decorative braided leather sling with integrated cartridge loops is included, secured to the barrel with a leather wrap and to the stock with a rear swivel. Key markings include the receiver’s left side transcribed as PEABODY’S PAT. JULY 22. 1862 MAN’F’D BY PROVIDENCE TOOL CO. PROV. R. I. and the barrel is specified as .45 LC just forward of the receiver. No external serial number is visible on the firearm. The action appears to function correctly, though we have not function-tested this firearm. Note – As an antique or black powder firearm, this item does not require a background check.

Condition report:

The blued finish on the barrel is in excellent condition, showing nearly full coverage with only minimal wear. The case hardening on the receiver and action remains vibrant with strong colors. The walnut stock and forend are in excellent condition with a high-gloss finish and only a few insignificant surface marks. The bore was not inspected. The falling block action operates smoothly and the hammer cocks and releases as expected.
