Description
This is a limited-edition framed display of five antique American barbed wire specimens, titled Living in the Past. The collection was produced by K.J. Smith in Parowan, Utah. Each specimen is mounted horizontally on cream-colored textured cardstock and identified by printed patent name and date: H. Reynold Necktie (May 14, 1878), Crandals Champion (November 4, 1879), C.A. Hodge Spur Rowel (August 2, 1887), Brinkerhoff-Martelle Ribbon (August 11, 1885), and Stubbe Plate (October 28, 1883). The lower-left corner is hand-numbered 297/300 in pencil. The lower-right corner contains a printed illustration of a cowboy on horseback and a handwritten pencil signature that reads Living in the Past K.J. Smith. The display is housed in a rustic, mitered frame made of weathered reclaimed wood with natural knots and grain. The reverse includes a manufacturer label for Living In the Past located in Parowan, Utah, and a standard fiberboard backing with a hanging wire.
Condition report:
The wire specimens exhibit significant, uniform oxidation and rust typical of salvaged historical material. The reclaimed wood frame shows intentional weathering, minor cracks, and visible knots. The interior cardstock is well-preserved with minor dust accumulation in the corners. The backing and hanging hardware are secure and in good working order.
