Gun Collectors Dream Auction #86 Collector Auction
Lot 64:
Sold for: $160
Description
This lot consists of 47 rounds of vintage .32 Long rimfire ammunition manufactured by The Peters Cartridge Co. of Cincinnati, Ohio. The ammunition is housed in a period-correct two-piece cardboard box that originally held a full count of 50 cartridges. The lead round-nose projectiles are seated in copper cases, consistent with early rimfire production. Verbatim markings on the top label include Peters, .32 Long R.F. Cartridges, Semi-Smokeless Powder, and The Peters Cartridge Co. Cincinnati, O., U.S.A. The label also features the number 50 in the upper corners and circular logos with the letter P identified as Trade Mark and Reg U.S. Pat Off. A production or catalog number 1158 is printed on the right side. The lot of 47 cartridges is a mixed group, with case headstamps featuring both the incised P for Peters and the incised H signifying manufacture by the Winchester Repeating Arms Company or for the Henry rifle. A small piece of white cotton wadding remains inside the box. Note – As an antique or black powder firearm, this item does not require a background check.
Condition report:
The two-piece cardboard box is in fair condition, showing significant age-related wear including scuffing, corner fraying, and a large horizontal tear across the front panel of the lid. The colors remain distinct but the paper is fragile. The 47 cartridges appear to be live, showing varied levels of surface tarnish on the copper cases. The lead bullets exhibit a consistent greyish-white oxidation patina throughout the lot. The varied headstamps confirm this is a mixed partial box. Due to the age of the components and the nature of early semi-smokeless powder, the functional reliability and safety of the ammunition cannot be guaranteed.
