Description
This is a semi-automatic rifle manufactured for Sears, Roebuck & Company under the J.C. Higgins brand, designated as the Model 101.16. The firearm features a 24-inch blued steel barrel equipped with a tubular magazine and is designed to fire .22 Short, .22 Long, or .22 Long Rifle cartridges, with the specific notation that it functions in semi-automatic mode only when using .22 Long Rifle ammunition. The receiver and barrel exhibit a standard blued finish. A distinguishing feature of this model is the dark brown marbled Tenite plastic stock, which includes a checkered pistol grip and an integrated grooved buttplate. The rifle is fitted with an adjustable rear notch sight and a fixed front blade sight, complemented by a period-correct J.C. Higgins 4x scope manufactured by the W.R. Weaver Co. of El Paso, Texas. Prominent markings on the barrel include J.C. HIGGINS – MODEL 101.16 SEARS, ROEBUCK & COMPANY, the caliber designations, and a series of patent numbers: 2094577, 2224758, 2223098, RE 22585, and 2271576. No serial number was observed, which is consistent with firearms produced for commercial retail prior to 1968. Note – All firearms require a federal 4473 background check.
Condition report:
The blued finish on the barrel and receiver shows areas of thinning, light surface oxidation, and minor handling marks consistent with age and use. The marbled Tenite stock remains in good condition, showing scattered light scratches and scuffs but no visible cracks or significant damage. The checkered sections of the grip show moderate wear. The bore is bright with well-defined rifling. The action appears to function correctly, though we have not function-tested this firearm with live ammunition. The J.C. Higgins 4x scope has clear optics with a standard crosshair reticle and minor external finish wear.
