Description
This J.C. Higgins Model 583.14 is a bolt-action shotgun chambered for 16 gauge shells. It features a 26-inch barrel with a modified choke and is proof tested for 2 3/4-inch chambers. The firearm is equipped with an under-barrel tubular magazine and a standard bead front sight. The barrel and receiver are constructed of blued steel, set into a one-piece walnut stock. An aftermarket Pachmayr White Line rubber recoil pad has been fitted to the butt of the stock. Verbatim markings on the left side of the barrel include J. C. HIGGINS – MODEL 583.14 over SEARS, ROEBUCK AND CO. The right side of the barrel specifies PROOF TESTED – 16 GA. MOD. and 2 3/4 CHAMBER. The recoil pad is marked TRADE WHITE LINE MARK, Pachmayr GUN WORKS, and LOS ANGELES 15, CALIFORNIA U.S.A. Note – All firearms require a federal 4473 background check.
Condition report:
The blued steel finish shows significant thinning throughout, with overall wear and scattered patches of light surface oxidation on the barrel and receiver. The walnut stock exhibits various scratches, dings, and handling marks consistent with field use. The bore is not clearly visible, but the external condition suggests a well-used sporting arm. The bolt action appears to function correctly, though we have not function-tested or test-fired this firearm. The aftermarket recoil pad is intact but shows age-related wear.
