Description
A pair of vintage Galilean-style opera glasses featuring black textured coverings, likely leatherette, accented with brass-toned metal bands. The components, including the eyepieces and central focus wheel, are of black-painted metal. Visible markings on the eyepieces include ‘BREVETÉ’ and ‘PARIS’. The binoculars are housed within their original fitted, kidney-shaped hard case, constructed of black textured leather or faux leather. The case is secured by a decorative brass-toned clasp and lined internally with a faded pink/peach velvet or felt. This lot dates to the late 19th or early 20th century.
Condition report:
Good antique condition, consistent with age and use. Extensive wear, scuffs, and surface grime are present on both items. The metal elements exhibit tarnishing and loss of finish. The leatherette covering on the binoculars shows rubbing and minor losses. The case exterior displays scuffs and wear. The interior lining of the case is heavily worn, faded, and discolored.
