Gun Collectors Dream Auction #79 Weapons of War
Lot 1417:
Sold for: $110
Description
A German M1884/98 K98 Mauser Bayonet and Scabbard. The bayonet features a single-edged metal blade with a fuller, a metal crossguard, and a bird’s head pommel with a rifle lug channel and release button. The grip is formed by two wooden scales secured with two screws. The blade is marked “BERG&Co.” on one side of the ricasso and “84 O” on the spine near the crossguard, along with faint proof marks. The scabbard is constructed from blued metal, tapering to a point, and includes a frog stud. It is visibly marked “W.K.C.” and “1937” at the top front, and “9563 / i” on the side near the frog stud. The differing maker’s marks and serial numbers indicate the bayonet and scabbard are not an original matching pair.
Condition report:
Both the bayonet and scabbard exhibit significant age, use, and handling, with wear to the finish, surface corrosion, patination, and discoloration on all metal components. There is visible wear to the wooden grip scales.
