Gun Collectors Dream Auction #79 Weapons of War
Lot 157:
Sold for: $600
Description
A Muster 1851 Kammerkarabiner US Civil War Import, a military-style firearm. Rifled; this version was imported during the Civil War with 10,000 Kammerkarabiner being purchased in Europe by Colonel George Schuyler for the Federal Army’s cavalry in late 1861. They were transformed from System Augustin tubelock to percussion using two techniques, this one being the “lump-of-iron” version originally developed by the Piedmontese Army in the early 1850s. The transformation work was probably performed in Liege, Belgium. This carbine features a shortened wooden stock and robust iron/steel barrel, lock mechanism, and fittings. The metal components exhibit a dark, heavily patinated finish. The wooden stock shows significant wear, including numerous scratches, dents, and areas of darkened patina from handling and age. Visible markings include a stamped “T” on the left side of the buttstock, and faint letters “P. A. 4” on the forward barrel band, with other indistinct and illegible marks also present on the stock. A sling swivel is present on the trigger guard. Examples of this model were often used as cavalry carbines and some were imported during the American Civil War.
Condition report:
Fair to good antique condition. Metal components exhibit widespread surface oxidation and pitting consistent with age and heavy use. The wooden stock shows significant wear, including numerous scratches, dents, and areas of darkened patina. The ramrod is absent. Markings are faint and indistinct in areas.
