Gun Collectors Dream Auction #79 Weapons of War
Lot 1573:
Sold for: $160
Description
An original Imperial Japanese WWII Gas Mask with filter, likely dating to the Shōwa era. The mask features a woven textile facepiece in a faded orange-tan hue, fitted with two large circular metal-rimmed eyepieces containing cloudy lenses, and an integral textile head harness. A cylindrical metal filter canister, appearing dull brown with surface oxidation, is attached to the bottom via a tan metal connector that incorporates a perforated exhalation valve. The filter canister bears molded Japanese text including “日本ゴム” (Nihon Gomu – Japan Rubber) and “昭和” (Shōwa), as well as a heavily worn paper label with a red Rising Sun-like emblem and printed Japanese text indicating “防毒用防護” (Bōdoku-yō Bōgo – Anti-gas protection), “使用法” (Shiyō-hō – Instructions for use), and the manufacturer “久留米日本ゴム株式會社” (Kurume Nihon Gomu Kabushiki Kaisha – Kurume Japan Rubber Co., Ltd.).
Condition report:
Fair to good condition consistent with its age and utilitarian nature, showing general wear, fabric discoloration, scuffing, and patination on metal components. The lenses are cloudy. The paper label on the filter canister is significantly degraded.
