Description
A U.S. Civil War percussion cap box, manufactured by Union G. Co. of Newark, N.J., and inspected by R. H. White. This military-style black-dyed leather pouch features a curved flap closure secured by a brass stud. The exterior flap is stamped with a circular mark reading “R. H. WHITE / U.S. ORD. DEPT. / SUB INSP.” The interior flap reveals a rectangular stamp “UNION G. / CO. / NEWARK / N.J.” The reverse side is fitted with two leather loops for belt attachment.
Condition report:
The item exhibits considerable wear consistent with age and use. There is extensive surface cracking, scuffs, and discoloration on the leather, particularly along edges and folds. Some verdigris is visible around the brass hardware and on the reverse side of the pouch. The leather remains supple in areas but shows significant hardening and loss of original finish in others. All original components appear to be present and intact.
