Lot 436:
A Group of German Deutsche Zündwaren-Monopolgesellschaft Safety Matchboxes, Mid-20th Century
Sold for: $20
Description
A group of four vintage German safety matchboxes, two closed and two open, revealing their wooden contents with dark tips. Constructed from paper/cardboard, each box features a yellowed label prominently displaying “HAUSHALTSWARE” (Household Goods) and “SICHERHEITS-ZÜNDHÖLZER” (Safety Matches). A central emblem depicts a stylized German imperial eagle (Reichsadler), surrounded by the text “DEUTSCHE ZÜNDWAREN-MONOPOLGESELLSCHAFT” (German Match Monopoly Company), suggesting a mid-20th century German origin, likely from the pre-WWII or WWII era. Additional markings include “IMPRÄGNIERT – GLÜHEN NICHT NACH” (Impregnated – Do not glow after [extinguishing]), circular text stating “FÜR KLEINVERKAUF: PREIS 30 PF. FÜR 10 SCHACHTEL” (For retail sale: Price 30 Pf. for 10 boxes), and the number “25”. The box exteriors are purple-hued.
Condition report:
The apparent condition indicates significant age-related wear, including extensive yellowing, creasing, minor tears, and overall discoloration to the labels and the purple-hued box exteriors.
