Description
A French Model 1886 Lebel/Berthier bayonet and its accompanying metal scabbard. The bayonet features a long, cruciform steel blade with a distinct fuller running along its length. The hilt comprises a dark-finished metal crossguard with a prominent muzzle ring and an integral locking mechanism, attached to a contoured brass or bronze grip. Engraved near the hilt on the blade, the text ‘St Etienne’ (Saint-Étienne, France) is visible. The tapered metal scabbard is finished in black and is complete with a metal frog stud. A faint, stylized anchor or crown mark can be observed near the scabbard’s throat.
Condition report:
Fair condition. The steel blade displays significant surface oxidation, pitting, and a dark, aged patina. The metal crossguard shows wear and patination. The brass or bronze grip exhibits a dark patina consistent with age. The metal scabbard shows substantial wear, patination, and surface rust throughout its black finish. The overall condition reflects considerable age, use, and environmental exposure.
