Gun Collectors Dream Auction #79 Weapons of War
Lot 511:
Sold for: $875
Description
A Japanese WWII Kyu-Gunto Officer’s Sword. This dress sword features a curved, polished steel blade and a hilt constructed from brass or gilded bronze. The hilt displays a D-guard, ornate floral designs on the backstrap, and a grip covered in cream-colored rayskin (samegawa) with visible ridged bands. A prominent circular emblem, identified as a stylized chrysanthemum (Kikumon), is visible on the spine of the pommel. It is accompanied by a metal scabbard.
Condition report:
The highly polished steel blade exhibits minor surface scratches and faint indications of a *hamon*. The copper alloy hilt shows heavy patination and areas of verdigris, consistent with age. The rayskin grip appears intact with visible grooves. The metal scabbard is in poor condition, with widespread heavy rust, pitting, and discoloration. A small cord is tied near the throat.
