Gun Collectors Dream Auction #79 Weapons of War
Lot 510:
Sold for: $900
Description
An antique American Sharps & Hankins Model 1862 Army Carbine, dating to the Civil War era. This single-shot, lever-action breech-loading carbine is primarily constructed from dark blued or patinated steel and a reddish-brown wooden stock, complemented by a brass buttplate. Visible markings on the receiver include “SHARPS & HANKINS”, “PATENT 1859”, and “PHILADA” (Philadelphia), accompanied by the initials “C.G.C.”. The underside of the action bears the serial number “6741”. The design features a distinctive sliding breech mechanism.
Condition report:
The metal components show significant finish loss, exhibiting a mottled grey-blue-black patina with areas of minor pitting and surface rust. The wooden stock displays numerous small dents, scratches, and wear consistent with its age, yet appears structurally intact. The brass buttplate is patinated with surface abrasions. The action, including the external hammer and lever, appears complete and capable of opening the breech, suggesting it is at least partially operational.
