Description

A U.S. Springfield Model 1873 Trapdoor Saddle Ring Carbine, chambered in .45-70 caliber. This single-shot breech-loading military firearm features a lock plate inscribed “U.S. / SPRINGFIELD / 1878” with an eagle device. The breechblock is marked “U.S. / MODEL / 1873” and bears the serial number “149079.” The rifle is constructed with a reddish-brown wood stock, likely walnut, and dark patinated or blued steel components. The buttplate is stamped “U.S.”, and faint proof marks, including “P” over “VP” with an eagle head, are visible on the barrel. An indistinct circular cartouche is present on the left side of the stock. The adjustable rear sight displays legible range graduations.

Condition report:

Condition is consistent with an antique military firearm. The wood stock exhibits significant wear, with numerous dings, scratches, and areas of finish loss. Metal components show substantial finish loss, dark patination, and some surface corrosion throughout. The action appears complete.
