Description

A classic American single-shot break-action shotgun manufactured by the Winchester Repeating Arms Co. of New Haven, Connecticut. This example is the popular Model 37 “Steelbilt,” chambered in 12 gauge with a 2 3/4 inch chamber. The barrel length measures 30 inches and is marked “FULL” choke. Identifying markings stamped on the barrel include “MADE IN U.S.A. WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN, CONN. PATENTS PENDING,” “MODEL 37-STEELBILT-12 GAL.,” and the “WINCHESTER TRADE MARK.” The receiver displays a faint, original “WINCHESTER” marking applied in red paint, identifying this piece as an early production “Red Letter” variant, typically manufactured between 1936 and 1946. The furniture consists of a wooden buttstock and forend. The buttstock is fitted with the original hard rubber buttplate embossed with the Winchester Repeating Arms Co. trademark. No serial number is visible, consistent with early production Model 37 shotguns. This firearm is subject to all federal, state, and local regulations.
