Gun Collectors Dream Auction #82 February 21st & 22nd
Lot 452:
Sold for: $35
Description
A lot consisting of two distinct vintage mechanical balance beam scales designed for precise measurement of gunpowder and bullets, commonly used in ammunition reloading. Both scales feature heavy, dark brown or maroon cast metal bases and graduated metal beams with sliding weights. The scales are marked in major divisions (e.g., 50, 100, 300 grains) and minor increments labeled “TENTHS.” The first scale is marked “REDDING” on the base and is associated with its original cardboard packaging, printed “REDDING,” “MODEL #3,” and “REDDING-HUNTER INC. CORTLAND, N. Y., U. S. A.” The second scale features a similar cast metal base, embossed prominently with “HERTERS INC. SINCE 1893 WASECA MINN.” and “PAT PEND.” The Herter’s company was historically known for providing high-quality sporting goods and reloading equipment. The lot includes two associated metal weighing pans, one for each scale. The Redding Model 3 scale is a classic piece of mid-century reloading equipment, often referred to as a Master Powder and Bullet Scale. The lot also includes a secondary corrugated cardboard storage box, heavily taped, with hand-painted red text reading “POWDER MEASURE.”
