Description

This collection consists of 4 vintage handheld bullet molds used for casting lead projectiles. The group includes three iron examples and one brass example. One iron mold is manufactured by Lyman and features a single cavity with turned wooden handles and a sprue cutter. The block is stamped LYMAN and marked with the numbers 245496 and 678. Two iron molds are manufactured by Ideal and are stamped IDEAL MIDDLEFIELD CONN U.S.A. One Ideal mold is marked with numbers 358, 429, and 115. The second Ideal mold is marked with the number 13 and is missing one wooden handle. The fourth item is a double-cavity brass mold designed to cast both a round ball and a conical bullet. This brass mold is fitted with dark wooden handles and a steel sprue cutter but lacks visible maker marks.

Condition report:

The collection is in aged, as-found condition. The iron molds show heavy surface oxidation, rust, and pitting throughout the metal components. The wooden handles exhibit wear, staining, and minor losses to the wood. One Ideal mold is incomplete, missing the wooden handle on the lower arm. The brass mold displays a darkened patina and various tool marks from use. Mechanical movement may be restricted due to the level of corrosion on the iron pieces.
